Mu 'awiya's aim was to stabilize Syria's frontiers, rather than to conquer and occupy new territories. This policy contrasts starkly with the Arab-Muslim advances across Iran during the same two decades. While I cannot present here a systematic comparison between the Iranian and Anatolian fronts, some explanation is required.
