Moving the Classroom Outdoors When she took her first teaching job in a small private school in Mississippi, she just opened the classroom door and took children outside. She hadn’t attended any outdoor learning workshops or read a book about the value of outdoor education. For her, the idea of incorporating nature into teaching was instinctive.

That’s not really a problem. Engaging outdoor learning activities can be done with a minimum of site enhancement. For example, the typical schoolyard has adequate diversity to supply data for a variety of math lesson applications. To extend a geometry lesson, go outside and find shapes in nature; to teach graphing and data analysis techniques, gather information about the makes and models of vehicles in the parking lot. Creative writing can be inspired by sitting on the lawn on a warm spring afternoon.

Here are a few suggestions that seem to work in most situations: Responders rather than initiators. In the early stages of forming a volunteer parent committee, stress that the group should see itself as a responder to needs rather than as an initiator of projects. Those are two very different roles. As a responder to needs, the group focuses first on finding out what teachers would like to have on the school site. The result is a much healthier relationship between teachers and volunteers and, more important, the creation of site enhancements that are truly wanted and used.
