A few hours later, however, when I tried at home to remember the last look of the director, it was not a gentle, but a frightened look that met me. I was kept home for a few days, then I returned to school. The third bench of the middle row was empty and remained so until the end of the school year. The long series of experiences that taught me to understand the problematic relationship between maxim and situation, and thereby disclosed to me the nature of the true norm that commands not our obedience but ourselves, had begun with this convulsion of my childhood.
When a Socialist club whose meetings I had attended a few times invited me to deliver a lecture, I decided to speak about Lassalle and did so. The lecture that I delivered was the image of a hero after the model of Carlyle. I pointed to a destiny that was intended for tragedy from the beginning. This tragedy was manifested in the path of his work—the failure of his undertaking to lay the foundation of a new society—but also in that of his life up till his absurd and yet symbolically significant death.
Suddenly, however, Herzl stopped before us, and spoke to us. His tone was by no means what we might have expected—it was a passionate but smiling tone, although there was no smile on his lips. ” he exclaimed. “Wholly differently! But there before the platform, directly opposite me, a girl— his fiancée, I have heard—placed herself; there she stood, her eyes flashing at me.
