E. the relations of exploited to exploiters and exploiters to exploited, are largely reproduced. The mechanisms which produce this vital result for the capitalist regime are naturally covered up and concealed by a universally reigning ideology of the School, universally reigning because it is one of the essential forms of the ruling bourgeois ideology: an ideology which represents the School as a neutral environment purged of ideology. (1971: 156) The notion of ideology forms a crucial part in Althusser's conception of schooling and its relationship to the economic imperatives of a capitalist economy.
By this, it was thought, the educational `underachievement' of minority children would be redressed. This enthusiasm for multicultural education was also enhanced by the apparent ease with which multicultural programmes could be adopted in schools; not only was it seen as a theoretical advance but it was practical as well, or so it seemed. Unfortunately, multicultural education, like its predecessors, has come to face increasing criticism of its own, particularly from radical theorists. The emphasis on cultural pluralism in multicultural education has come under fire from radical critics for its inability to move beyond the surface manifestations of culturalism, and its consequent inability to address the structural inequalities which limit the life chances of minority children.
The school's willingness to trust their educational intentions and their history to the researcher who requested an interview with them in early 1990 is indicative of the school's openness. Also indicative, however, has been the close critical engagement with, and critique of, my subsequent work. Reciprocity and mutual responsibility for teaching and learning are hallmarks of the school's educational approach and, as a result, I have learnt more about education over these last four years than perhaps at any other time.
