Lorraine made a beautiful garden. Her boy took to backyard cricket and his mother remembers the early signs that he hated losing. Once, when his grandmother bowled and took his wicket, he flung his bat and stormed off. Jody remembers that her older brother showed an early, fierce will to win the board games the family frequently played. At his first school, Ashcroft Primary, Mark was usually first in class, and it was here that he developed a voracious appetite for books. He’d often come home at lunchtime, read, and trot back to school when he heard the bell ring.
The need to find a way out was overwhelming. Education would be the means. By his mid-teens Latham had earned a reputation not so in keeping with the quiet, studious boy he’d been at primary school. He’d developed a combative outspokenness at Hurlstone that irked some teachers. When he was a 15 year old in Fourth Form, Latham wrote a scathing article for the school magazine, Harvester, attacking the school’s administration for waste and mismanagement, questioning where the pupil levy for school excursions was being invested.
