As outlined in chapter 1, there is also a broader issue at stake. The judgement of Charles as a failure rests in part on a teleological assumption: the fact that his reign ended in his own deposition and the collapse of the Carolingian empire is taken to demonstrate that he was a weak king. This in turn feeds into and supports the longstanding historiographical models which underpin the conventional negative interpretation of the late Carolingian empire as a whole: most notably, that the aristocracy ‘rose’, that France and Germany ‘emerged’, and that murderous conflict within the royal house escalated.
