In the 1930s a new Japan was being created; Chinese and Koreans proved to be inconvenient and died in the millions. The Nazi policies of the 1940s removed a variety of "undesirables" from the face of the earth: Poles, Russians, Serbs, Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, and communists, none of whom had a place in the new world order. In taking the "Great Leap Forward" the Chinese found that it was necessary to sacrifice millions of their own people during the 1950s. In the 1970s Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge achieved distinction by eliminating 2 million Cambodians, almost one-third of the country's population.

Viewpoint: No. The flow of cultural influences is multidirectional, and American culture legitimately enjoys mass popularity in Europe. A major fact or, some would say, consequence of America's rising power in the twentieth century was the expansion of its culture throughout the world, particularly in Europe. To the alarm and disgust of some critics, American music and movies were already gaining popularity after World War I. S. contribution to winning World War II, American culture grew more and more influential, impacting not just arts and entertainment but also dress, cuisine, and even language.

Differences in political, economic, social, and cultural outlook across the Atlantic may seem less fundamental when juxtaposed to what scholar Samuel P. Huntington has called the "clash of civilizations" (for example, Western versus Islamic), but they are not so inconsequential as to be brushed aside as mere minor variations. Disagreements with regard to the role of the state in running the economy, caring for the population, promoting cultural innovation, and acting as an international player have become increasingly evident between Europe and the United States.
