83 28 Health Care Practitioners In a similar story to that of vision care, technical developments in dental care led to a struggle for control over new dental appliances, such as crowns, bridges, and dentures. One branch of technologists, the denturists, or dental therapists as they were also called, fought successfully for independence from the dentists, while the other, now referred to as dental technologists or dental technicians, continued to work under the prescription and/or supervision of the dentists.
Some of these men went on to become health practitioners, generally after a stint at a battle-front, but they were the low men on the medical totem pole. The general surgeon's position improved in the broader medical profession as the latter's art increasingly moved towards invasive treatments, but the dentists sought autonomy. 32 A self-regulating monopoly had been won. 33 Another specialist group hoping to gain that same advantage was pharmacy. It represented an interesting, and to this day, contentious, addition to the major divisions which developed among the health care providers, in that it combines both a professional career and a merchant career.
The distinction was really one between the anti-medical practitioners who preferred to remain true to their founders' reluctance to tamper too much with the body, and those willing to pick up some of the interventions, albeit the less heroic ones, of the medical profession. 57 Canadian osteopathy, more in keeping with its British counterparts, came to be seen more as a complementary specialty to medicine. Ironically, neither the strategy of remaining distinct from the medical profession nor the strategy of assimilation proved very successful in the long run.
