Although the Flathead appeal in 1831 went unanswered by the Catholic hierarchy in Saint Louis, Protestant missionary groups answered the Indians' call immediately and decisively. A letter in the March 1, 1833, Christian Advocate and Journal of New York detailed the plea of the Flathead delegation and created a minor sensation among Protestant churches, several of which acted. The Methodists took the field first, dispatching Jason Lee and his nephew Daniel, both ordained ministers, to the Pacific Northwest the next year.

Nicholas Biddle's narrative Expedition under the Command of Captains Lewis and Clark, first published in 1814, had developed quite a following among the privileged, literate families of Europe about the time the young Peter De Smet entered boarding school, so he knew that the captains' great adventure had begun in Pittsburgh, followed the Ohio River, and proceeded up the Mississippi River to a point opposite Saint Louis. Now it would be Peter John's turn to retrace their route to his new home in Missouri.
