The variety of studies embraced by these themes, and the potential for tension between different approaches, have sometimes been regarded as marks of disciplinary weakness. Taken together, however, the different facets of geographical study have the power to advance our understanding of the world in important and distinctive ways (see Massey, 2001). In part, this reflects geography’s transcendence of the conventional intellectual divide between the social and natural sciences.
They contrast the need to think of sustainable development in terms of progress along a long-term path with the common assumption that contemporary participation provides a panacea, and that uncertainty about the meaning of sustainable development can be countered by pragmatic experimentation. This raises questions about the link between spatial scale and the social organization of actions intended to promote more sustainable development. No amount of action at local level can substitute for action at national level, and local action may be ineffective without a facilitating national institutional framework.
But how do political factors influence the sustainability of development and attempts to improve it? Do current political systems inherently favour the dominant influence of elites and preclude real progress toward more sustainable development? If so, how can such bias be detected and documented? Can a more balanced approach to development be achieved? Are environmentalists correct in believing that the increasing flows of goods, capital and information that constitute globalization harm not only national sovereignty but also the environment and sustainable development in general?
