Education is a key site through which a modern state exercises power, acting, among other things, as a mechanism of socialisation and control for its young people. Yet, a significant proportion of students are visibly alienated from school and society, as evidenced by truancy, school exclusion units and antagonistic youth subcultures. There has also been a failure to sustain school improvement in the UK, as measured by government targets, examination performance and literacy levels. Socially, such divisive attitudes towards education are exemplified in the state/private schooling split, which, despite recent initiatives to ‘widen participation’, still tends to characterise education in the UK as essentially hierarchical and socially exclusive in terms of class, gender, age, ethnicity and academic achievement.
