The potential for an explosion was therefore great, but it was a completely unexpected result of the stalemate at the Dardanelles which provided the needed spark. The first sea lord, the professional head of the navy, had been since October 1914 Admiral Lord Fisher, whom Churchill had brought out of retirement when an ugly public outcry forced the German-born Prince Louis of Battenberg to resign. Fisher was seventy-four. A fiery, dynamic man who had Page 17 accomplished great work in modernizing the navy during his first tenure as first sea lord (190410), he was past his best.
