As a benchmark for classiﬁcation accuracy, we run a ﬁrst experiment where we discriminate subjects considering only physical features, in particular their height (γ) and arms (α) and legs (β) lengths; this is representative of usual classiﬁcation based only on simple anthropometric parameters. The classiﬁcation results using this set of features (S1 ) are shown in Table 2, where it can be noted that ν-SVM yields an accuracy of about 60%. As a second trial we used the set S2 that includes two standard gait parameters, namely stride length (δ) and walking speed (υ) but, as shown in Table 2, the achieved classiﬁcation accuracy turns to be rather poor.
The problem of denoising of ToF data has been addressed in a number of works [18-21]. Modern denoising approaches, such as edge-preserving bilateral filtering  and non-local filtering , have been modified to deal with ToF data [19, 21]. In , a range-adaptive bilateral filter has been proposed, by adjusting its size according to ToF amplitude measurements, since the noise level in distance measurements varies depending on the amplitude of the recorded signal . In our work, we specifically consider the 2D/ToF fusion in the so-called low-sensing mode.
The two sensors are displaced and have different field of view w and spatial resolution. Therefore, the distance data acquired from the low-resoluttion ToF sensor needs to be projectively aligned and fuused with color data; a process, referred to as 2D/ToF data fusion. Computationally, this requires reprojection of thee depth data from the low-resolution grid to world cooordinates and then back on the higher-resolution grid of the color sensor followed byy resampling to get the depth vaalues at the grid points.
