Even though they were pacifists, the Mennonites did not accept their fate passively. Rather, when persecution threatened, they moved. A twelve-man Mennonite expedition immediately crossed the Atlantic to look for a new home. Among the places they chose to settle was Kansas, a choice made easier by the encouragement of railroads offering low prices for their vast holdings of governmentgranted fertile land. The Santa Fe Railroad sent an agent, C. B. Schmidt, to Russia with promises of reduced railroad rates, barracks to accommodate the Mennonites while they built homes, and a Red Star steamer to bring their farm implements and household goods to America.
When he was discharged, Unruh had no idea of what he wanted to do. Virginia insisted he attend USC. “I decided he had better go to school, because he had the GI Bill. He hadn’t even thought about going to school,” she said. “I insisted . . I just told him if you are going to make anything out of yourself you’ve got to have a vocation. 3 million men and women who the gi bill of rights 33 served in the armed forces, who availed themselves of the education and vocational training offered by one of the furthest-reaching pieces of legislation in American history, the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, known as the GI Bill of Rights.
