The pupil listened attentively and, apparently quite satisfied, went on carefully with her work. Offers of help with work Rather than merely explain, some teachers responded to pupils’ occasional uncertainties at novelty by making positive offers of help and then working alongside the pupil. This was most marked in the lessons of PGCE students and experienced teachers. An extract from the lesson of an experienced business studies teacher shows how she was quick to help a girl who had arrived late.
Not all the people interviewed could be observed, and constraints included whether they taught the principal target age range of 11–13 year olds and the extent to which their teaching timetable allowed observers to watch their lessons at appropriate times. All sixty people interviewed had agreed to being observed should the need arise, and no one subsequently refused. Where choice permitted, we tried to include in the sample, teachers with varied views as well as different subjects and preferred teaching strategies.
