The more suitable materials are obtained with MTMS and exhibit very low density (80-100 kg/m3), very high surface area (~ 400 m2/g) and small pore size (~ 30-40 Å). They also show moderate flexibility and a remarkable hydrophobic character (~ 150º). Introduction The development of new and more powerful techniques for the analysis of materials at molecular scale has enhanced the study of chemical systems at this level. Following this trend, the materials synthesis technologies based on bottom-up approaches, namely the sol-gel technology, has experienced a significant dissemination.

Vol. 17 (1998), p. 24 Synthesis of alumina and aluminum nitride layers on a graphitic substrate via a sol-gel route. fr Keywords: Sol-gel process, aluminum nitride, carbothermal nitridation, thermodynamics. Abstract In this study, our objective is to deposit an alumina or an aluminum nitride layer on a turbostratic carbon substrate. The coatings are synthesized via a sol-gel route followed by a heat treatment in order to obtain α-alumina or hexagonal aluminum nitride by carbothermal nitridation of alumina.

Fig. b shows traces of AlN at 1300°C. This is due to the treatment duration. A longer treatment is expected to lead to a higher nitridation rate. This is confirmed by Fig. 5 that shows XRD patterns of samples treated at 1400°C for 8 hours in the small furnace and at 1200°C for 8 hours in the big furnace. Fig. 6 and 7 show EDX maps and backscattered electrons micrographs of the as-treated samples.
